What are the candidates’ records on campaign finance reform?

Bill Smith

Bill has no policy on campaign finance reform.

However, we can examine Bill’s record on this issue when he was President of the PC Party. Under Smith’s watch, the PC Party solicited and received donations from taxpayer funded entities, including school boards, colleges, universities and municipalities. Alberta’s Chief Electoral Officer investigated these donations and ordered the PC Party to pay the money back.

“Wildrose Leader Danielle Smith charged Thursday the Tory party accepted more than $100,000 in illegal donations from municipalities and other public bodies between 2004 and 2010.” - Calgary Herald

Naheed has disclosed donors in every election.

Naheed Nenshi has been a consistent, vocal advocate on the need for campaign finance reform since before he ran for mayor in 2010. Mayor Nenshi believes that "politics should be about the best ideas, not the most money.

“Putting the right rules in place would help all citizens be confident that their leaders are acting in the best interests of the community." - Naheed Nenshi

Mayor Nenshi has made his position clear again this campaign and will continue to push for reforms to these provincial rules. Read Naheed's Campaign Finance Policy

Andre Chabot

Andre has followed the rules, but his stand on reforms is unclear.

image description

Andre Chabot has followed the current laws on campaign donation disclosure. However, Chabot has not taken a clear stance on the need for reforms to the campaign finance rules. On March 31, 2014, Chabot voted against a motion for the City of Calgary to adopt a formal position on specific reforms to campaign finance rules for the Government of Alberta to consider.
